Today in sports history

Ten years ago today, Brian Cashman was named to the easiest, and yet most difficult, job in North American professional sports general manager of the New York Yankees. For a full decade now, he has been able to cover up all his mistakes by spending more of George Steinbrenner's money. But with that power comes the extreme pressure of being expected to build a World Series champion every single year. By that measure, Cashman has failed for seven years in a row, even though the Yankees have gotten to the playoffs all of those years.
